Pink is the New Green: Sustainability at Mary Kay

Mary Kay Ash founded her dream company on one very important principle: The Golden Rule. We all know it. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” We practice this at every level of Mary Kay. I believe firmly that this doesn’t just apply to the way we treat people—but the way we treat our planet. We’re firmly committed to building a future that’s healthier, greener, and sustainable for generations to come.

Besides, Mary Kay does business all over the world—we better take care of it!

We’re taking steps in our research and development group, and improving our manufacturing processes, to lessen our environmental impact across the Mary Kay enterprise. That includes looking at how we produce, package and deliver our products and how much energy we consume doing just that.

In 2018, we opened our new Richard R. Rogers Manufacturing/R&D Center in Lewisville, Texas. Its state-of-the-art R&D labs and cutting-edge manufacturing technology will allow this new structure to function as a Zero Waste to Landfill facility. We’ll continue to produce best-in-industry products today while practicing sustainability for the future.

Earlier this year, we were thrilled to announce that the Richard R. Rogers Manufacturing/R&D Center was awarded the coveted LEED Silver certification. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED certification is awarded to projects that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated using healthy, highly-efficient and sustainable practices.

That marks the second Mary Kay location to receive LEED certification. Last year, our Mary Kay China office in Shanghai received LEED Gold certification for its green building leadership and excellence in sustainability.

Through the Mary Kay Foundation and its Pink Doing Green initiative, we’re contributing to organizations committed to a cleaner, greener planet. For example, recently we worked with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant over one million trees worldwide. And we’re just getting started!

Whether through research and manufacturing, or working in partnership with key environmental groups, we’re committed to a better environmental future for our employees, our independent beauty consultants and our communities.

Haven’t you heard? Pink is the new green.
